Despite my multiple trips into NYC this year, I was definitely in a slump from my Asia trip. I’ve come to realize that I’m a bit of a travelling junkie, and I’m always looking for next adventure. However, when I heard on the news that there was going to be the Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights tonight, I was a bit skeptical because being in Southern Ontario, you rarely see these things. I also had Brandon who was also interested in going out to shoot that night, so I had an impetus to see this mission through.

However, the one bonus about living just outside of the sticks was that it was a 3 minute drive until I was in an area of relatively limited light pollution. So I head out with my camera in hand just to see if I could get a glimmer of the Northern Lights.

After a few photos, I saw a few discoloured clouds in the photos, and immediately knew it was a faint aurora. I called Brandon and let him know I would be at his place in 30 minutes and that we would head to Port Perry right after that.

Lo and behold, the Northern Lights were definitely very faint, and I had to do a bit of post work to get to look this way. The colours like purple and green were already there, but I had to drastically saturate them to give you, the viewer, something interesting to look at.

It’s all binary, you either do it or you don’t. In this instance, I’m glad I executed this. We left at around 5am, and I dropped Brandon back at his house, and I drove to work. I napped for about half an hour in my parking before starting work.

I have no regrets.
